The Wide-Awake Princess by E. D. Baker (2 reviews)

The Wide-Awake Princess
Yes
This book had a very slow beginning, but it got better and better as the book went along. I thought the cover did not reflect the contents as well as it could have. It does show one girl awake and one asleep, but it did not portray the heroine as well as it could have, and it did not show the lack of magic that she had.
The most compelling aspect was the amount of random fairy tales that E. D. Baker incorporated into the book. This book had parodies of not only Sleeping Beauty, but Rapunzel and The Princess and the Pea as well.
Annie is a princess who has been given the gift (or curse?) of no magic affecting her. So when her sister, Princess Gwendolyn, falls to the terrible curse of Sleeping Beauty, it is up to Annie to find a Prince Charming for her to kiss, even if it takes her over bumpy roads, through disgusting swamps, and through lies and truths that may make Annie wonder if she is still searching for a prince for Gwendolyn, or for herself.
